Who Was Amanda
Amanda Luanne Mitchell was a vibrant, energetic, beautiful child. When
she was 11 years old, she was diagnosed with a form of bone cancer
called Metastatic Osteosarcoma. Amanda fought an inspirational fight
for 2 ½ years and succumbed to Osteosarcoma on July 8th, 2009. . It was
her dream one day to establish a foundation to help other children
coping with childhood cancer. Amanda Gives Back was established to
celebrate Amanda’s life.
How the Foundation was formed
Amanda Gives Back foundation sprang out of a vision Amanda had for one day being able to help children who were dealing with the same adversities she, herself, went through battling osteosarcoma. Amanda lost that battle, now her dream has been adopted by her mother Christine. With the help of Amanda's Physical Therapist Miriam. Christine’s hope is to help fulfill Amanda's dream by making a child’s hospital stay a little brighter, bringing awareness of childhood cancers and raise money for cancer research.
Our Goals
| Our hope is to reach children/teens and their families who are battling
cancer through education, resources and encouragement. It is important
to nourish these families by giving mental, emotional, and spiritual
support. Our focus is specifically for affected teens that should be
having a life filled with friends, school, homework, activities, sports
and dances instead of a devastating life changing disease that
interferes with normal childhood.
Our main goal for the foundation is to provide the medical facilities
that touched Amanda with recreational tools and activities that will
help engage and entertain children and teens during their
hospitalization as well as adopting pediatric cancer patients and their
families and providing them with gifts for Christmas.
This past year we were able to raise enough funds to purchase and donate a popcorn machine to the Pediatric
Hematology/Oncology Clinic at Memorial Hospital. This year our goal is
to donate a jukebox for the pediatric floor of Memorial Hospital
(music can play an important role in recovery), to increase the number
of families we are able to adopt at the Christmas season, and to donate
monies for Osteosarcoma cancer research.
